Papanastasiou Anastasios

I am an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Immunohistochemistry in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of West Attica in Athens, Greece. At the same time I am an external scientific collaborator at the Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Alexander Fleming” through the InfrafrontierGR/Phenotypos.

I am a certified Surgical Pathologist and I possess a Pharmaceuticals Diploma from Patras University and a Master of Sciences on Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics. My PhD concerns the identification and functional characterization of mutations that cause the immunodeficiency syndrome, Hyper-IgE in humans. During my PhD I was a visiting researcher at the Immune Disease Institute of Harvard Medical School under the supervision of Professor Michael Carroll. Since then, I have been a postdoctoral researcher in the Laboratory of General Biology (2011), in the Department of Medicine in the University of Patras, a research associate in the Molecular Oncology Laboratory (2012) in the Department of Medicine in the University of Patras and a research fellow in the Department of Pathology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NY under the supervision of Dr. Jorge Reis-Filho, MD, PhD, FRCPath.

My research focuses on all aspects of human molecular pathology, with special focus on cancer development and progression (Pathology, Cancer Biology and Genetics, Bioinformatics). At the same time, I have experience with the histology and pathology of multiple mouse disease models and cancer xenograft models. In our laboratory the goal is to apply all classical and modern molecular histology techniques to study human disease and especially cancer, through a holistic approach from molecules to cells up to tissues and organs. In that way we employ all DNA and RNA relevant techniques (DNA, RNA isolation, PCR, Cloning, Sequencing) protein techniques as Western blots, IF, Immunoprecipitation and IHC, on cancer cell lines and FFPE samples. Our aim is to identify novel prognostic and predictive biomarkers in human disease and cancer that will enable earlier diagnosis and better treatment options.

At the same time I am the principal investigator in the Molecular Pathology Group of the Anatomy, Pathology and Physiology-Nutrition Laboratory of the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the University of West Attica.
